My generation is living in the information age. We can get information from the internet, television, and radio at faster rate than our parents could. Some people believe that too much information is a bad thing. They believe that technology has made us unable to focus, loss our attention spans, and prevents us from learning about the world and people around us. I have to disagree with the people who believe this.
I believe that technology helps me to get along better in the world than those who are older than me. For example, I was in the car with my brother a couple weeks ago and we were lost. My brother, Mike, had taken a wrong turn and we wound up going into Union. He had no idea where were going and I was getting nervous because I thought we'd be lost for a long time. Mike pulled over and used his cell phone to go to Mapquest. He typed in our location and our home address. Mapquest gave him the directions home and we arrived there safely, but late. In the past, people had to either read a map, if they had one, or stop and ask someone on the street for help. With technology, Mike and I received the information we needed to get home safely. We didn't have to talk to a stranger or read a map.
From my experience with my brother, I learned that in this case technology was helpful. I learned a cell phone has another purpose besides just texting my friends. With the technology of a cell phone, people should feel safe if they are lost.

Welcome to our class, Ms. Carroll
Hi Ms. Carroll and welcome to Herbert Hoover Middle School. You are in for a big surprise from your new students. My name is Matthew and I'm in the sixth grade, which you probably already know. I am the youngest child in my family and the last one to go through HHMS. I like to play video games, ride my bike, and lately I've been shoveling a lot of snow! I take the bus to school and if you go to an earlier post you will read that I don't like to ride the school bus. I have a good sense of humor and sometimes that gets me into trouble. I do need to be reminded to stay on task. I can also be a chatterbox, which is what my mother calls me. I don't like to do a lot of homework so please don't assign any.
At home, I have a puppy named Coco. My mother named her after Coco Chanel. I would have named her Snowball because she is all white. My older brother, Mike, enlisted in the Army and leaves for Fort Sill, Oklahoma on February 14. My other brother, Chris, is in ninth grade at Edison High School. My dad sells cars and my mom is an English teacher at Edison High School.
Here in class we have many things to keep us busy. We are studying about jobs and careers now. We have been taking tests to see which jobs we would be good at. I found out that I would be a good federal law enforcement agent. In class, sometimes it is noisy and sometimes we are quiet. We have to be quiet when we are taking tests and working on the computers. Sometimes we get off topic and then we get too noisy. I think you will like our class. We are energetic and social. But we always get our work done.
I hope you enjoy your stay at Herbert Hoover and you learn a lot about being a teacher and about us. Good luck!

New Years Resolution
The start of the new year is exciting because it means that I get to start the year off with a clean slate. This year, my main resolution is to improve my grades in my classes. Many times I don’t complete my homework and this lowers my average. If I did all my homework, my grades would improve and more importantly, I would understand the concepts better. In order to improve my grades, I will listen more closely in class, not talk so much, and write down my assignments in my planner. At home, I will complete my homework without being distracted. I know if I work really hard I can accomplish my goal.
